Worship Music

In my second blog post I mentioned that I would be posting an entry about a future blog on worship music, and now the time has come. There is a wide range of worship music out there ranging from your traditional hymns sung in Anglican church services, to more modern songs. It is the modern stuff I love the most, so here I am offering ten such songs.

1. How deep the father's love.
This is one I have sung in services a few times and is one which really speaks to me because it talks of the Crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus

2. Lord I'm Grateful (Grace)
Whilst I'm yet to sing this one, it is one of my favourites and one I have heard a few times.
3. You are more
This is one I have only recently discovered and fell in love it from the first time I heard it, because in my view it is God speaking to me, telling me I am not worthless (as I sometimes feel I am) and instead am a priceless part of his creation.
4. Hymn
I heard this song for the first time a few years ago whilst on holiday in Germany, and it has remained one of my favourite songs even when I wasn't a christian.
5. One thing remains

The lyrics are pretty self explanatory, as it's about how God loves us all no matter what we do or where we go in our lives. Yeah I'm a romantic
6. City on Our Knees
This is another one I knew about long before I was christian. I discovered this one in high school when a youth oriented church came to promote a concert they do every year in my school and do workshops with students.

7. Revelation Song
I first heard this in my first few weeks of being a christian.

8. God's great dance floor

This one is a very face paced, dance type one :D

9. By your side
I discovered this one only the other day, and truly felt like God himself was speaking to me. I gets to me big time…

10. 10,000 reasons
Need I say anymore?

The Bible

It is common knowledge that the bible is the holy book for Christianity. It is God's word written down and details the lives of people that are familiar to us such as Jesus and his disciples and Moses who brought the Hebrews out of an oppressive regime and a life of slavery in Egypt. It has been around for many centuries now and as such there countless translations (versions of it). I am aware of the following versions

  • The Good news bible
  • The King James bible (KJV)
  • The English Standard Version (ESV)
  • New International Version (NIV)
It is the NIV version I'd like to concentrate on in this post. This because I own this beauty
That is the NIV Student Bible. It wasn't cheap (it was £30!) but it is one of the best things I've ever chosen to invest in. I cannot recommend it enough for those of you like me are new to God and his word. It breaks it down into understandable and useful features like
  1. 100 people you should know
  2. A guided tour (commentary on a particular passage featuring a relevant life question)
  3. History of the Old Testament
  4. Biblical Events
  5. Reading tracks
It is the reading tracks I love most about it. So far I have done reading track 1, part 1 which looks at the life and times of Jesus and takes about two weeks to do. I am now on part 2 which focuses on St Paul. I have made my readings a part of my day and even make notes on who features in a passage, what happens in it and a summary/application section. I then put these in my "Journey into christianity' folder.

I hope you have found this blog an enjoyable read and all comments are appreciated :)

The Bible in Cinema

It has come to my attention over the past week or so that there are two new films, due for release in cinemas over the coming months which bring the stories of the bible to the big screen. So I thought I'd write this blog about the bible on the big screen as there have many visualisations of the iconic parts of the bible.

The exodus
The first film that's due out is "Gods and Kings" this is the latest flick which focuses on the exodus, which can be found in the Old Testament. This isn't the first time this chapter of the bible has been bought to the big screen. It was most famously done in the 50s with the four hour epic that is "The ten commandments" starring Carlton Heston as Moses. It was then done by Dreamworks animation in the 90s with "The prince of Egypt" which to this day remains one of my all time favourite films. The trailers for all three versions are below:

The life of Jesus
The other film which is coming out is "The son of God". With its pretty self explanatory tittle this is the life and times of Jesus Christ as told by the Four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, John and Luke). I watched the trailer (again this is below) for the first time the other day and got the chills watching it. Previous cinematic adaptations have looked at specific part of his life such as his crucifixion and resurrection 3 days later (as visualised in the passion of christ).

The accuracy of films like this varies, for instance Ramses and Moses pranking the priests in "The Prince of Egypt" and having chariot races with one another doesn't exactly feature in the old testament. I can't really comment too much about the exodus story as I haven't studied it in depth yet. But the ones about Jesus really bring to life his extraordinary life.

Christianity isn't just found in films though, there's also a wide range of songs of Worships by Christian artists and I will be covering that in a future entry.

Finding Christ

First of all I'd like to welcome you to my blog, detailing my life as a young adult christian in 21st century Britain. Unlike some christians I wasn't born into Christian family. I was however christened as a baby and believed in God for most of my young life, until I hit GCSE R.E where I established that I was not a christian as I once thought I was. I was in fact an agnostic, a non christian. For a few years I had very mixed religious beliefs but this year my life changed forever. I met my now ex partner at Uni through a friend, we talked, one thing led to another and we became more than just friends. Then one night he confided in me he was (and still is) a christian. At the time it didn't bother me, but one sunday whilst sitting alone in 'Costa Coffee' I began to ponder my eclectic religious beliefs and for a few days it bothered me. I talked it out with my boyfriend, who sat me down with his housemate (also a christian) and perhaps the deepest discussion I have ever experienced. Several minutes, and a 'leap of faith' later I became a christian. Since then I haven't looked back and am now reading the word of the lord, attending church services and praying on a nightly basis. That's pretty much it so far but I still have an amazing journey ahead of me as I grow and develop as Christian.
